Most luxury cars in India use sophisticated automatic gearboxes: ZF 8-speed units in BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover, 7G and 9G-Tronic in Mercedes-Benz, dual-clutch S tronic and DSG in Audi, and PDK in Porsche. Many are sold as "filled for life" — but heat and traffic say otherwise.

Transmission Repair: common questions

Is gearbox oil really "lifetime"?

Several gearbox makers themselves recommend fluid changes in the range of 60,000–100,000 km, especially in hot, stop-start conditions like Indian cities. A timely fluid service protects the gearbox.

Does a harsh shift mean I need a new gearbox?

Not usually. Many shift problems come from old fluid, a solenoid, the conductor plate or adaptations. Proper diagnosis often avoids a full replacement.
