A replacement automatic gearbox is one of the biggest repairs a luxury car can need. Most gearbox trouble, though, starts small — and many problems that feel serious are fixable without a new gearbox.
Common warning signs
- Harsh or delayed shifts, especially between lower gears.
- A jerk when moving from Park to Drive or Reverse.
- Shudder or vibration when pulling away gently (common on dual-clutch gearboxes).
- Gearbox stuck in one gear with a warning message — limp mode.
- Engine revs rising without the car speeding up.
- Fluid spots under the middle of the car.
Which gearbox does my car have?
Many BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover models use ZF 8-speed automatics. Mercedes-Benz uses its own 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic. Audi uses both conventional automatics and S tronic dual-clutch units, depending on model; Porsche uses PDK dual-clutch gearboxes. Each has its own common issues and service needs.
The "filled for life" myth
Several gearboxes are marketed as having lifetime fluid. In hot, stop-start traffic the fluid breaks down sooner, and gearbox manufacturers themselves often recommend changes at intervals in the region of 60,000 to 100,000 km. A timely fluid and filter service protects the gearbox for the long run.
Diagnose before you replace
Shift problems are frequently caused by old fluid, a faulty solenoid or conductor plate, low fluid level, or adaptation values that need resetting. A proper scan and inspection usually separates a simple fix from a major one.
