6 Warning Signs Your Air Suspension Needs Attention

Car sagging overnight? Compressor always running? Learn the early signs of air suspension trouble on Mercedes, Range Rover, Audi and BMW — and how to keep the ride perfect.

Air suspension gives luxury cars and SUVs their floating ride and adjustable height. It is also one of the systems that suffers most on Indian roads. The good news: it usually gives warning signs before it fails completely — and catching them early keeps the repair simple.

The six signs

  • One corner sits lower after the car has been parked overnight.
  • A "suspension fault", "vehicle too low" or chassis warning message appears.
  • The compressor runs for a long time, very often, or sounds louder than before.
  • The ride feels harsher, bouncier or floatier than usual.
  • The car takes a long time to rise to normal height after starting.
  • You hear hissing near a wheel after switching off.

Why it happens

Air springs are rubber bellows. Heat, dust, age and repeated hits over speed breakers cause tiny cracks that leak. The compressor then works harder to make up for the leak, and eventually overheats or wears out. So one small leak can turn into two failed parts.

What to do

Do not ignore a sagging corner. Get the system pressure tested to find the exact leak — it may be an air spring, but it can also be an air line, fitting or the valve block. Replacing only what has failed keeps the job precise.

Avoid high speeds and rough roads while a suspension warning is on, and never jack the car on air suspension without putting it in jack or transport mode first.
