Mercedes Service A & B and BMW CBS, Explained Simply

What the service messages on your Mercedes-Benz or BMW dashboard mean, what each service includes, and when to service sooner than the car says.

Both Mercedes-Benz and BMW use on-board systems to tell you when service is due. They are useful — but they assume ideal conditions, and they are easy to misunderstand.

Mercedes-Benz: Service A and Service B

Mercedes uses a system called ASSYST. Service A is the smaller service: engine oil and filter plus a set of safety checks. Service B is the larger one and adds items such as the cabin filter, brake fluid and more detailed inspections. The two usually alternate, roughly every year or a set distance, whichever comes first. Extra items such as spark plugs, air filter and transmission service are added at specific intervals.

BMW: Condition Based Service (CBS)

BMW’s CBS tracks individual items separately — engine oil, brake fluid, front and rear brakes, vehicle check and so on — and estimates when each is due based on how the car is used. You can see each item’s status in the iDrive menu.

Why we often recommend servicing sooner

  • Indian city traffic means long idling and short trips — classed as severe use by most manufacturers.
  • High ambient temperatures and dust degrade oil and filters faster.
  • An oil change every 10,000 km or 12 months protects turbochargers and timing chains.

Keep the record clean

Whoever services your car should reset the service indicator correctly and give you a dated record of the work. That record matters for resale value.
